Where to start?

It’s hard to start learning any language, especially to learn Dutch. Because of its unique grammar rules, it can be difficult to find resources that will help you to start learning the language. The best way to begin learning Dutch is to find a tutor or a course that can help you to get started with the basics of the language. However, every person is different in learning a new language. So please read below ways to get started in your Dutch learning journey.

Resources & Books

There are many resources available online and in print that can help you learn Dutch. Some recommended resources include:

  • The Dutch Language Course for Beginners by Pauline C. Hendriksen
  • Basic Dutch: A Grammar and Workbook by Andrew D. Wilkinson
  • Dutch for Dummies by Simon Woolcot
  • Teach Yourself Dutch by Gerdi Quist and Dennis Strik.

Our personal favorite is ‘Nederlands in gang‘. This is the book our language school will use during our beginner courses Dutch.

As you can see, there are many resources and methods. Please ask yourself which resource you like and what method can be used to accomplish a good level of talking Dutch.

Five ways to get started with learning Dutch as a second language

In addition to these resources, it is also recommended that you find a tutor or take a Dutch language course in order to get started with learning the basics of the language. These are five ways to get you started:

  1. Start with the basics.
Make sure you know how to pronounce the Dutch alphabet and common Dutch words. You can find resources to help you with this online or in Dutch language textbooks.
  2. Learn Dutch grammar.
This is essential for being able to construct sentences and communicate properly in Dutch. Again, there are many resources available online or in Dutch language textbooks to help you with this.
  3. Practice, practice, practice.
The best way to learn any language is to practice it as often as possible. Try to find opportunities to speak Dutch with native speakers or other learners. You can also practice by listening to Dutch language podcasts or watching Dutch language TV shows or movies.
  4. Be patient.
Learning a new language can be challenging, but it is important to be patient and to keep at it. Don’t get discouraged if you make mistakes or have difficulty understanding things at first. Just keep practicing and you will eventually get the hang of it.
  5. Have fun.
Learning a new language can be a fun and rewarding experience. Make sure to find materials and activities that you enjoy so that you will be more likely to stick with it. Look at it like using it as a social tool. Do you want to speak to your Dutch neighbors? Let’s try to chat with them or even ask if they are open for small chat once in a while. Whatever you like in your social life, pick that activity to practice Dutch.

Congrats, you've started! Now let's keep it up:

You are already a true Dutch to be. Once you are started, these are the three ways in which you are able to stay in the flow while learning Dutch:

  1. Immerse yourself in the Dutch language as much as possible. This includes listening to Dutch podcasts, watching Dutch TV shows and movies, and reading Dutch books and newspapers.
  2. Practice speaking Dutch with native speakers as often as possible. This can be done through Dutch language meetups, online language exchange websites and apps, and private tutoring.
  3. Use Dutch learning resources such as online courses, apps, and podcasts to supplement your immersive and conversational practice.
